Stephen Wilyman

Corporate experience includes Managing Director of Revlon and Commercial Director of Philip Morris. CEO of two internet start ups. Awarded business migration sponsorship status in 1985 by the Australian Government, Stephen went on to build a successful publishing business in Western Australia; his case study was subsequently used by the Australian government.

Advisor to companies on business improvement, working globally with blue chip clients across a wide range of sectors.

Loves relaxing in and on the water of Poole harbour, discovering new travel destinations and watching the artistry of Arsenal football club. Keen swimmer and skier and collector of antique furniture.

 

Martin Carr

Martin Carr

Martin has over 25 years experience in the retail sector having held senior roles as both a retail operator and advisor in the UK and overseas.

As an operator, his early career included management roles with Marks and Spencer and River Island before a 12 year period at HMV Group which included the launch of the business in Hong Kong and Singapore, Director of Retail for Waterstones and MD of the HMV business in Australia. In Australia the business doubled in size over 5 years and became a significant profit generator for the group. He has also more recently been Chairman and subsequently CEO of troubled retailer Modelzone.

Since 2003, as a consultant to the sector, Martin has been retail advisor at EY and PWC and also operated independently as a consultant in the sector. He as advised on many different assignments including commercial reviews (strategy, market and competitor assessments), Operational investigations (costs, working capital, margin enhancement and portfolio transformation) as well as business turnaround and restructuring. Clients have included Private Equity investors, lending banks and retail management teams.

Martin lives with his family in Lewes in Sussex and when time allows enjoys cycling in the South Downs. He has completed charity bike rides from London to Paris and from Geneva to Nice and is planning his next 2-wheeled venture.


Jeremy Whaley

For 25 years he was founder and CEO of young fashion chain Pilot during which time he grew the chain to 130 UK stores including 5000 sq. ft. Flagships in London Oxford St, Birmingham and Newcastle, 4 European and 2 Middle Eastern Stores were also opened during this time.

A 80,000 sq. ft. Head Office and Distribution Centre was acquired to facilitate the distribution over 95,000 garments a week. Jeremy developed and evolved the Head Office function to suit the needs of the business, these included Finance, HR, Property Management, Field Team Organisation and Store fitting out. A central London satellite office was set up to accommodate buying design and merchandising.

He also acquired and restructured a factory outlet retailer, and within 3 years grew sales to £18 Million from 26 Outlets.

Jeremy opened his first store in 1980 following early career in Sales and Marketing with Cadbury Schweppes after studying for a HND in business studies, He is married with 3 Children.


Finlay Caldwell

Findlay Caldwell

Findlay has an extensive retail and bluechip brand background covering many retail sectors, from fashion to durables. As Executive Chairman of QS group, he led a strategic review of the company and implemented a complete physical and financial restructuring. This resulted in the eventual sale of the business to a leading Indian textile company, Alok Industries, and the launch of a new retail chain, Store Twenty One. 

For the previous eight years, he was Managing Director of RAC Motoring Services. Findlay doubled turnover and profit through organic growth of the breakdown business and the acquisition of BSM, Autowindscreens and the development of Financial and Legal Services businesses. 

Prior to RAC, Findlay was Merchandise and Marketing Director with Dillons bookstores and prior to that, Marketing Director of Littlewoods stores. He was previously Marketing Services Director of Boots the Chemists and Merchandise, Marketing and Store Development Director of Halfords, where he developed and rolled out "edge of town" trading format.  

Early career positions included senior marketing positions at Dixons and Harris Queensway groups. Findlay was born and educated in Scotland, has a BSc in Mathematics and is married with two children. His interests include sailing, motorboating and skiing.

 

Azhar Khan

Director and Senior Analyst 

Azhar runs and manages all Mteq P4i’s as a Senior Analyst. He also oversees operational delivery of projects. Prior to Mteq Ltd., Azhar spent twelve years with an private International American implementation consultancy. He has delivered operational implementation assignments for blue chip clients across the world. To date, he has been responsible for the successful delivery of more than £150M in operational improvements for his designated clients. His Industry experience is extensive, having delivered assignments in mining, retail, steel, manufacturing, aerospace, chemicals, electronics, insurance, retail and Healthcare. 

 

Peter AepliSimon Gardner
CFO

Simon is a qualified accountant and an experienced FD and CEO including Finance Director at Harvey Nichols, where he was also responsible for merchandising, distribution, property and IT, and FD and subsequently CEO of Caledonia Motor Group, one of the largest car retailers in the UK.

Simon’s broad experience enables him to deliver operational and organisational improvements across all business areas and his strength is in finding innovative and creative solutions. He also ensures that financial modelling of proposals are robust and have fully considered all factors before being implemented.

Leisure time is taken up by family and friends and Simon enjoys cooking and has had a recipe published (albeit for charity). A mid-life ‘better late than never’ foray into running has peaked with a recent half marathon.

 

Peter AepliPeter Aepli
Chairman of the Advisory Board

Swiss national, English barrister at law, formerly president of Mister Minit (4,500 shops) and Chairman & CEO of the 5 à Sec Group (1,400 shops), world’s largest dry cleaning chain. Experienced in retailing,  petro-chemical, hedge fund & related service industries.  Advisor to banks, private equity and companies for international operations & expansion, structures,  retailing and franchising.  Commercial & residential real estate investor and advisor.

Interests include golf (poorly), mountain walking & trekking, skiing, travel, dogs and fine wines (chevalier du tastevin).

 

David Short

David Short
UK Market Advisor

David has held senior roles in implementation consultancy for the last 16 years, working globally with clients - mostly blue chip but also has considerable experience in owner operated and family run businesses. He has been involved in the successful sale and delivery of improvement projects worth hundreds of millions sterling in client profit improvements.

A finance man by profession, David was previously CEO of a European retail services group and FD in manufacturing, service and retail organisations.  

Keen on most sports and playing golf whenever he can - off a handicap of 26 he seems to be on a personal crusade to ‘plough’ some of the better courses in Berkshire.
